With further development of globalization, China is getting closely engaged with the outside world, and more workshop programs on China’s culture for foreign experts, teachers and officials are being held in China, which in turn demands more interpreters to participate in the program. The importance of interpreters’ performance and the quality of the interpreting begin to emerge. This paper aims, through an analysis of the intercultural-oriented interpreting the author experienced and encountered during a workshop program, to find out how important intercultural communication competence is in interpreting, what are the methods to overcome cultural obstacles in interpreting and how we could develop an interpreter’s intercultural communication competence. After a literature review of the definitions and previous studies and research on interpreting and intercultural communication competence, the author carries out a case study by sorting out different cultural obstacles in order to “go across” cultures, dividing intercultural-oriented interpreting into different topics and giving translation coping strategies respectively. Guided by the definitions of components of intercultural communication competence, three reflections, respectively from the linguistic and cognitive perspective, the affective perspective and the operational perspective, are given in terms of how to develop an interpreter’s intercultural communication competence. The framework of the paper consists of four chapters: first, a general introduction of the paper; second, the literature review of interpreting and intercultural communication competence; third, a case study on intercultural-oriented interpreting and intercultural communication competence; fourth, the conclusion.
