A Study Of The Chinese Experience Of German Female Missionary Emily Marie Hudertmarck

The female missionary Emily Marie Hundertmarck(1912-1998)was sent to China by Berlin Missionary Society in 1936,and she lived and worked in China for more than ten years until 1949.During these years,she stayed first in Huizhou,later in Guangzhou and Peking,where she witnessed the real situation of the people's life and the social de-velopment in China.She payed special attention to the living conditions of Chinese women and made detailed records from the western perspective.In order to carry out missionary work better in China,Emily Hundertmarck studied Chinese language and culture actively after arriving in China.She came to Peking in 1942 and had then much contact with local German sinologists.She began her research on Lu Xun in 1941 and translated Lu Xun's essay "Death",lecture "Silent China" and short story "White Light"into German.From the perspective of both Chinese Christian history and German sinology history,Hundertmarck is a valuable research object.But up to now the domestic academic re-search on her is almost blank.In consideration of this situation,this paper selects Emily Hundertmarck as the research object and investigates her experience and translation ac-tivities in China comprehensively.The main body of this paper consists of three chapters.Chapter one discusses Hun-dertmarck's experience and activities before and during her stay in China by means of her memoirs and related archives.Chapter two discusses the Chinese women's life and the people's social life from perspective of Hundertmarck.Chapter three focuses on her Chinese language learning and translation activities.In this chapter the first and second parts deal with her language learning and communication with German sinologists in Pe-king.The third part first explores the origin and motivation of her translation of Lu Xun's works,and then exams the strategies and methods she used in the translation process.The case study of Emily Hundertmarck in this paper is helpful to deepen the understand-ing of the Sino-German literary and cultural relations in modern times.
