This report is a brief study based on the translation of A Tour of the Forbidden City(chapters 3-4),aiming to describe the process and outcome of the translation practice. As a travel book,A Tour of the Forbidden City gives a comprehensive introduction of the Forbidden City in Beijing and its content involves a great deal of Chinese history and culture information. Therefore, the translator should not only analyze the differences between Chinese and English, but also fully consider the readers' acceptability.Reception aesthetics believes that only understood and accepted by readers can the target text realize its aesthetic value and social function. Therefore,in this report, the translator divides the problems encountered in the process of translation and the translating methods used into three aspects: understanding, expressing and revision, and analyzes them with specific cases on the basis of reception aesthetics.Accurate understanding is the precondition of translation and the essential basic skill of the translator. To avoid the misunderstanding caused by lack of cultural knowledge, the translator should read relevant materials and completely understand the information the source text conveys, which will lay the foundation for high-quality translation. In the process of expressing,on the basis of analyzing the differences between Chinese and English, the translator chooses translating methods such as conversion and sentence structure reorganization to make the translation conform to the characteristics of the target language.Revision is mainly aimed at the translation of cultural information. As A Tour of the Forbidden City carries the unique culture of China, the translator uses the methods of amplification, omission and adding notes to translate the Chinese elements contained in the original text,so as to help readers understand the original text accurately and further contribute to the spread of Chinese culture.Summarizing the translating methods adopted in this translation practice can not only improve the translator's translation ability, but also play a certain reference role in the translation of tourism texts.
