| The source text of the translation practice is Chapter 10 of The Central Asian Economies in the Twenty-First Century: Paving a New Silk Road written by Dr.Richard Pomfret.The book describes the relationship between the five Central Asian countries and the external powers and the role of the five Central Asian countries in the global economy,aiming to let readers understand the economic development of Central Asia in the 21 st century.The source text is an informative text,and the language is concise and logical.A large number of nominalization structures are used in the source text.Nominalization has the features of objectivity,neutrality and conciseness.The translator analyzed the translation difficulties caused by nominalization at three levels: lexical,phrasal and sentential,and used some translation methods under the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory to solve these problems,such as translating English nouns into Chinese verbs,adjectives and adverbs,translating English phrases into Chinese words and clauses,and translating the sentences with nominalization structures by following the original syntactic order,using division and amplification.The translation practice report consists of five parts.The first part is the introduction,including the background,task description,significance of the translation task,and the layout of the report.The second part is the translation procedure,including translation preparation,preliminary translation and proofreading and polishing.The third part presents the translation difficulties caused by nominalization and introduces Catford’s translation shifts theory.The fourth part is case analysis under the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory,including application of the class shifts at lexical level,the rank shifts at phrasal level and the structural shifts at sentential level.The fifth part is the conclusion,including findings and limitations. |
