| With the proposal and implementation of "The Belt and Road" Initiative,Xinjiang, located in the Silk Road Economic Belt, ushered in a new opportunity for developing its economy and culture, and set off a new upsurge of Silk Road research.Therefore, the book Along the Ancient Silk Routes: Central Asian Art from the West Berlin State Museums was selected to be the translation task.The book is a description for art treasures of several Buddhist grottoes in two areas of Xinjiang. The content of the book is detailed and easy to understand, which could satisfy needs of both professional Buddhism researchers and the public readers.It’s also a classic reference book for enthusiasts and professionals at home to study and explore the grotto art of Central Asia and some other areas along the ancient Silk Road. Through translating the book, the Central Asian art, especially the Buddhist art in Xinjiang, is expected to be spread and developed.This translation task involves the latter part of the book with content covering the introduction and description for most of the exhibits(from No.34 to No.152)including various kinds of cultural relics of arts: grotto murals, sculptures, wood carvings, Buddha niches—found in several grottoes in Turpan and Kucha—and Buddhist stories. The report consists of five parts. Under the guidance of functional translation theory, the feature of the text has been analyzed and different translation methods have been used to deal with difficult points at both lexical and syntactical levels. And the last part of the report is a conclusion of the whole translation practice. |
