Economic development is related closely to science and technology, which increases the urgency to learn these advanced technologies, and the significance of EST translation has been increasing. However,Chinese and English exhibit significant differences. Therefore,it is essential to understand these differences fully and utilize the theory of translation shifts to produce a natural and accurate translation.Based on Catford’s translation shifts theory and the translation practice of“Qualification of Active Mechanical Equipment Used in Nuclear Facilities”,this article aims to classify and summarize types of translation shifts based on text characteristics through case analysis, and proposes translation techniques used in this task from vocabulary, sentence, and text.At the lexical level, the paper illustrates “dynamic-static”shifts guided by category shifts and “general-specific” shifts guided by intra-system shifts. At the sentence level,it mentions “active-passive” shifts guided by structural shifts,“long sentence-short sentence” shifts guided by unit shifts, and “theme oriented-subject oriented” shifts guided by structural shifts. At the textual level, the study discusses “tense-time adverb” shifts guided by level shifts and “implicit logic-superficial logic” shifts guided by unit shifts. The findings indicate that the theory of translation shifts is congruent with translation practice, which means that it can serve as guidance for translators to generate smooth and fluent translations that align with Chinese expression habits.
