Cloze has now become one of the core questions in various language tests.In the college entrance examination,cloze accounts for 20%of the total score,which is enough to illustrate the necessity of the research on cloze.However,currently,cloze is also the most time-consuming and lowest scoring test type for students.For cloze,teachers still adopt the traditional translation mode in teaching,paying attention to the explanation of vocabulary and grammar but ignoring the role of discourse cohesion in answering cloze.In addition,the definition of cloze in the English curriculum in college entrance examination is to test students'comprehensive language ability.Based on the background above,this paper mainly analyzes the application of cohesion theory in answering cloze and eventually tries to guide students to improve their ability to answer cloze by applying cohesion theory.In the process of analyzing the application of cohesion theory to cloze,I mainly adopt descriptive and quantitative analysis methods.Both of the analysis methods are to analyze how the application of cohesion theory is reflected in the cloze test through specific examples based on national cloze test papers and show the usefulness of cohesion theory in the process of answering cloze by means of data table.This paper is mainly divided into six chapters.The first chapter is introduction which introduces research background,research purpose and research framework.The second chapter is the literature review which mainly describes the status and achievements of the research on cloze at home and abroad.The third chapter is the theoretical foundation,systematically expounding the cohesion theory from the concept and classification of cohesion,which lays theoretical foundation for the chapter five.The fourth chapter is about the analysis of cloze test.The importance of cohesion theory in answering cloze is determined by the characteristics of the cloze.The fourth chapter is mainly divided into two parts:the characteristics and option division of cloze.The fifth chapter is the analysis of the application of cohesion theory in answering cloze,which is the main part of the paper.It analyzes the application of cohesion theory in answering cloze specifically based on the corpus in national cloze test papers from the perspectives of lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion.The sixth chapter is the strategies for taking cloze tests from the perspective of cohesion theory.It discusses how to improve students' ability to answer cloze from two aspects:students and teachers.Through the analysis of theoretical studies and data on application examples,it can be seen that cloze is inseparable from cohesion theory.In other words,applying cohesion theory to cloze makes examinees answer cloze questions.The application of lexical cohesion devices can help students exactly make correct choices among the four similar options through the clues provided by the text,while the use of grammatical cohesion devices can help students explore the connections between the sentences in a text.Thus,to improve the examinees'ability to answer cloze,students should employ relevant knowledge of cohesion theory to comprehend the internal connections in a text.For students,firstly,they should systematically study the cohesion theory,especially the lexical cohesion devices and grammatical cohesion devices and their application to exercises.Secondly,in the process of learning a text,students should cultivate discourse awareness and understand the meaning from the whole text rather than a series of isolated sentences.For teachers,they should shift the traditional teaching mode,paying attention to guiding students to employ cohesion theory to answer cloze.In addition to popularizing the two major cohesion devices mentioned above,teachers should also apply them to daily text explanation,analyzing articles from the perspective of discourse and paying much attention to cultivating students' discourse awareness instead of only highlighting the teaching of vocabulary and grammar.
