In the English test paper for Senior High School Entrance Examination,cloze test,which is a necessary part of an English test,makes up 12.5 percent of the test,so its importance is self-evident.To measure the integrated skills of the English language is the main purpose of cloze test.The test requires students to have a solid grammar foundation and a large number of vocabulary.It also requires students to have a high level of reading ability so that they are able to find effective clues according to the context.Therefore,students need to develop critical thinking and holistic thinking to some degree so that they are able to analyze and solve problems independently.The characteristics and requirements of the English cloze test indicate that language teaching methods are not only limited to grammar explanation and semantic interpretation.Therefore,it is necessary for junior high school English teachers to improve the teaching of reading from the perspective of the whole discourse.Teachers are required to use scientific teaching theories to guide teaching methods,and help students improve their comprehensive discourse comprehension ability and improve students' ability to accomplish cloze better.Based on the discourse cohesion theory,this thesis discusses how to apply discourse cohesion theory and cohesive devices to develop junior high school students' ability to accomplish cloze.This thesis adopts the methods of theoretical analysis and empirical research,aiming to solve three problems:This thesis aims to solve three major problems:(1)Why can discourse cohesion theory be applied to cloze teaching?(2)How to develop students' ability of accomplishing cloze by applying cohesion theory in English teaching?(3)Is discourse cohesion theory effective in developing students' ability of accomplishing cloze?To figure out these three questions,the author first introduces the cohesion theory.After that,the author carried out an empirical study of teaching for three months,using cohesion theory to guide cloze teaching in the experimental class,aiming to analyze whether cohesion theory is effective in developing students' ability to accomplish cloze.After a period of teaching,the author analyzed the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental class and the control class,and found that the students in the experimental class had significantly higher scores in cloze than those in the control class,which proved that the cloze teaching based on cohesion theory could develop students' ability to accomplish cloze.
