Sylvia Plath is one of the most renowned poets and influential novelists in American literature history during 20th century. Her poetry reveals a strong female consciousness, demonstrating resistance against masculine oppression, negation towards patriarchal society and requirements for women's self-liberation and self-worth.This thesis takes feminism as the main critical approach, trying to explore female consciousness in Plath's poetry.Women's struggle for getting individual space and the conflicts between writing and the expected role in the family and society are analyzed in detail. The thesis includes five chapters. The first chapter introduces Sylvia Plath,Plath's poems and feminist theory. The second chapter analyzes the awakening of female consciousness as daughter, wife and mother respectively in Plath's poems. The third chapter narrates women's struggle and protest in Plath's poems from the following views:struggle for female identity, protest against male power and pursuit of women's autonomy. The fourth chapter interprets women's self-discovery and self-realization in Plath's poems. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part.Plath's poetry has a strong feminist atmosphere, shuttling among confession, self, death and rebirth. It shows that Plath is aware of the social pressure which women are suffering. She challenges the patriarchal society in a unique way to realize women's freedom and self-worth.Her poetry not only reflects the awakening of female consciousness but also achieves female self-realization.
