Inhibition of return(IOR)is identified as a special visual search promotion mechanism, characterized by respond more slowly accurately to target stimuli at previously attended spatial location.IOR exists not only in the visual modality, but also in the across modality. However, there are similarities or differences between visual IOR and cross-modal IOR.According to the "reorienting hypothesis",the disengagement of attention has been considered a necessary and sufficient condition for the IOR effect. However,a large number of studies have found that disengaging attention might be neither necessary nor sufficient for the IOR effect to be observed:IOR can be observed without disengaging attention from the cued location(disengaging of attention is not necessary),and facilitation instead of IOR can be observed after disengaging attention from the cued location(disengaging of attention is not sufficient). The "reorienting hypothesis"explaining the IOR phenomenon have been challenged. Therefore, this study useed event-related potentials(ERPs),and attempts to explore the relationship between attentional disengagement and IOR,by regulated the degree of attentional disengaging from cued position. In Experiment 1,a non-predictive orienting cue(an arrow)was used as a central cue between in visual cues and visual targets,to investigated the relationship between attentional disengagement degree and visual IOR.The behavioral results showed that the IOR effect was greater when the attention was disengaged from the cued position.EEG results showed significant interaction in N1,marginal significant interaction in P3,and significant IOR effect was found for N1 and P3 when the attention was disengaged from the cued position. This result suggested that the degree of attention disengagement has an effect on the visual IOR.In Experiment 2,a non-predictive orienting cue(an arrow)was used as a central cue between in auditory cues and visual targets,to investigated the relationship between attentional disengagement degree and cross-modal AV-IOR.The behavioral results showed that the IOR effect only appeared when the attention was disengaged from the cued position.EEG results showed significant interaction in N1,marginal significant interaction in P3,and significant IOR effect was found for N1 and P3 when the attention was disengaged from the auditory cued position. This result suggested that the degree of attention disengagement has an effect on the cross-modal AV-IOR.This effect occurs throughout the early to late stages of sensory, perceptual, decisional,or response stages.
