Different from the old idea of "People lost in play will lose their aims",the Report on the Development of Educational Games in China(2018)points out that nowadays major countries and regions in the world attach great importance to the role of games in education, and China also lists learning games as one of the high-quality educational resources.Nowadays, with the increasing popularity of information technology, multimedia learning games with information technology are a hot topic at home and abroad.Under this background, some foreign researchers begin to pay attention to the unique advantages of non-multimedia learning games in the information age. There is a small number of comparative studies of multimedia and non-multimedia learning games abroad, with a gap in domestic comparative studies. With the development of "Internet+Education",electronic whiteboards gradually replace traditional blackboards and chalks in the school where the author works.Meanwhile, the author finds that learning games relying on multimedia are more attractive to students and easier to make than non-multimedia games. Thus, the author is interested in the advantages and teaching influence of these two kinds of learning games. The author divides learning games into"multimedia learning games" and "non-multimedia learning games" based on "the involvement of multimedia technology".From the four aspects of "game design" before class,"learning process" in class and the achievement of "skill goals" and "emotional goals" after class, this paper compares and studies the significant differences between the effects of multimedia and non-multimedia learning games on classroom English learning, finds out the advantages of the two kinds of learning games, and then summarizes the targeted optimization strategies.Firstly, this study summarizes the research status and theoretical basis of learning games both home and abroad.Secondly,56 students in Grade 7 of a junior high school in Wuhan were selected as research objects.During the second semester of Grade 7,both multimedia learning games and non-multimedia learning games were carried out in English classes.Data and information were collected through classroom observation, questionnaire and interview, and data processing and analysis were performed using the online version of SPSS(20.0),i.e.SPSSAU.Four significant differences are found between multimedia and non-multimedia learning games:(1)In terms of game design, students' awareness of game rules in multimedia learning games is significantly higher than that in non-multimedia learning games.(2)In terms of skill goals, the training effect of non-multimedia learning games on students' oral ability is significantly better than that of multimedia learning games.(3)In terms of emotional goals,non-multimedia learning games play a significantly greater role in promoting communication than multimedia learning games.(4)In terms of learning process,in non-multimedia learning games, students' willingness to participate in cooperation is significantly higher than that of participating in games. The advantages of multimedia and non-multimedia learning games include:(1)In terms of game design, multimedia learning games are more powerful than non-multimedia learning games.(2)In terms of skill goals,non-multimedia learning games are more conducive to the training of oral and listening skills than multimedia learning games.(3)In terms of emotional goals and learning process,non-multimedia learning games are more helpful in creating a space for communication and cultivating the spirit of cooperation than multimedia learning games. And this study proposes targeted optimization strategies. Finally, the limitations of the study and the prospects for future studies are proposed.Through the comparative study of multimedia and non-multimedia learning games, this study aims to analyze the significant differences and advantages of two kinds of learning games, and propose optimization strategies. The author hopes the study can help the use of learning games in English classroom,as well as fill the gap of domestic research.
