This paper analyzes the graded readings adapted from ancient narrative literature works,such as from narrative poetry,historical and biographical literature,drama and novels,etc.,and shows that the difficulty of texts is an important indicator of the grading readings.The vocabulary difficulty is the main factor that influences the difficulty of text.Other factors include word annotation,narrative method and text genre,etc.The summary has been made that principles and steps of rewriting these literary works into graded reading materials suitable for Chinese as a second language learners.At present,one of the problems that students face in extra-curricular reading is that the needs of Chinese language learners do not match well with the published readings.In recent years,with the vigorous development of Chinese international education,the demand for teaching materials and various kinds of auxiliary books has increased,but the publication of extra-curricular reading materials started late,especially the publishing proportion of graded Chinese reading materials is still not enough.The survey of overseas students extracurricular reading shows that the lack of appropriate extracurricular reading materials is the main reason why they do not read or read less.Graded Chinese reading materials are professional reading materials arranged scientifically and scientifically according to students' language learning level.Narrative of ancient literature is the outstanding works of ancient literature in our country,it has experienced the historical inspection and selection,these works have literary value and historical cultural connotation,by reading these works can make the language learners to have a better understanding of Chinese history and culture,also can improve students' reading level and presentation skills.When narrative poems were analyzed,it has been shown that the key index of classification is text difficulty.In this paper,"Chinese reading compass" was selected to evaluate the difficulty coefficient of three books adapted from the same story.Some Chinese teachers and students were invited to read the samples.The subjective evaluation of teachers and students was taken as a reference to verify the accuracy of the rating of "compass".The result turns out the influence of vocabulary difficulty and the way of language internal adjustment on text difficulty.Vocabulary difficulty is the key factor to influence the whole text difficulty,word notes,illustrations,and explanations of the language and cultural context can also help students understand the text more easily.Exercises questions and other supplementary materials can deepen readers' understanding and memory of the reading materials.These principles should be followed when ancient narrative literature works are rewritten into graded readings: the integrity and interest of the story should be considered when selecting stories,and the structure and characters should be relatively complete,the readability should be taken into account when rewriting the text.The difficulty of the text should be as low as possible in the corresponding level,and the difficulty should be graded in detail.When adding cultural annotation,we should consider the needs of readers and make sure that there is no basis for understanding cultural background.The brief steps to adapt the ancient narrative literature into graded reading materials are as follows: first,determine the characters and plots suitable for adaptation,write a fluent story,and use the "Chinese reading compass" to grade the difficulty of the text;Then according to the difficulty of the grading range and reference the Chinese level of standards and grammar outline,the outline of HSK vocabulary and Chinese characters and China outline of HSK vocabulary adjust text vocabulary difficulty,add words explanations or supplementary material,final reoccupy "compass" for the text difficulty.These two steps may need repeated several times,and finally finish the story,writing exercises in the end.
