Translation Method Of Metaphor In Sandalwood Death In Japanese From Relevance Theory Perspective

Metaphor in literary works contain rich cultural background knowledge and convey complex connotation and significance,it is a major puzzle that how to effectively translate metaphors and convey implicit meanings in metaphor translation.The relevance theory of human communication and cognition which proposed by Sperber and Wilson provides a new perspective for metaphor translation.On this basis,Gutt proposed the theory of relevance translation.He combined translation with cognition and relevance principles,and regards relevance as the basis in the process of understanding and translating the original text.Whether the translation can be able to provide the best contextual effect and create the best connection with the reader is an important factor for the success of translation.From the perspective of relevance translation theory,the process of metaphor understanding is the process of the target language readers finding the best association with the context based on the translator's explicit information.After comparing and analyzing the original work of Sandalwood Death with its Japanese version,the author summarizes the translation methods of metaphor in the Japanese version,which can be summarized as: direct translation and indirect translation.Among them,the direct translation is divided into: 1)literal translation;2)interpreting translation;Indirect translation is divided into: 1)simile method;2)metonymy;3)ostensive method;4)omission method;5)amplification method;6)free translation.On the guidance of relevance theory,as well as in combination with the characteristics and expression habits of Japanese and Chinese language,this paper analyzes the rationality of metaphor translation method.The paper is mainly composed of three parts: the first chapter is the introduction;the second chapter is the literature review,summarizing the relevance theory and its guidance to translation practice,the process of metaphor translation and the strategy analysis: the third,fourth chapter are the main part,starting with the translation method under the guidance of relevance theory,and analyzing the rationality of the translation and exploring the reasons.Finally,the paper summarizes the previous article and draws a conclusion from it.
