| Metaphor translation,as an important carrier of cultural elements,has always been considered to be a significant but difficult issue in translation studies.Since the 1970 s,as metaphor study turns to cognition,metaphor as a cognitive means has been increasingly known,breaking the traditional study pattern of metaphor,and providing a new window for those who are engaged in metaphor and translation studies.In the meantime,emotion plays an important role in human life and is usually considered to be metaphorical as it is often blurry and abstract.Tan Xiangxing,a long historic masterpiece written by Mo Yan,the first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in China,represents the author's return to the traditional.Since its publication,the novels rich cultural connotations have attracted great attention.Its English version Sandalwood Death was translated by Howard Goldblatt,American Sinologist and the sole English translator of Mo Yan's novels,and published in 2013.Goldblatt contributes substantially to the translation of modern and contemporary Chinese literary works and promotion of Chinese literature to be known by people throughout the world.Goldblatt's Sandalwood Death has not only been highly praised by Mo Yan but also well received by readers and critics.Thus,the English version of Tan Xiangxing is of high value and is worth studying.In this thesis,the translation strategies which Goldblatt employs to present emotion metaphors to readers are studied from the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory.Meanwhile,this thesis attempts to offer some insights in appreciation and practice of metaphor translation in literary works.To this end,this thesis clarifies the metaphor of happiness,anger,sadness,fear,and love in Tan Xiangxing based on K?vecses' s classification of emotion and the context.In the research,quantitative methods as well as qualitative methods are used based on the conceptual metaphor theory.The thesis selects emotion metaphors from the eighteen chapters of Tan Xiangxing and their corresponding English expressions in Sandalwood Death as corpus,and classifies the two-hundred metaphors into happiness,anger,sadness,fear and love according to their different source domains characteristics such as orientation,weather,temperature,and human organ.On this very note,the characteristics,working mechanism,translation strategies and the factors influencing translation strategies of each kind of emotion metaphors are explained.The findings show that domestication is employed in one-hundred and twenty five out of the two-hundred(62.5%)selected examples,while foreignization is employed in seventy-five(37.5%).Given the data,domestication is obviously used more frequently than foreignization when Goldblatt translates the emotion metaphors.With respect to specific translation strategies,Goldblatt bears in mind that there is disparity between Chinese and English and is also influenced by its subjectivity when addressing emotion metaphors.In this context,diverse strategies are adopted for the different cases,which turn out to be four: literal translation,free translation,image deletion,and image transformation.They have proved to be effective in emotion metaphor translation.In addition,translation is so complicated that the translator is also influenced by factors such as culture in translating specific emotion metaphors.All in all,except for some aspects that are modified due to cultural conflicts and habits,Goldblatt's version well delivers the emotions contained in the original text,and he flexibly adopts different translation strategies according to different contexts.Moreover,he sometimes flexibly combines the strategies of domestication and foreignization in his translation,thus helping the target readers better appreciate the beauty and charms in Mo Yan's work. |
