As a typical Victorian period in British history,it is generally considered to be between the profound changes of romanticism and the rise of modernism.The melancholic mood in the Romantic movement swept across Europe in the 19th century,and Britain is no exception.Such melancholy can be seen in British paintings and novels.This article's research on the characteristics of painting in this time period focuses on the emotions and spirit of the era.Although the Victorian era is highly materialized and urbanized,it is also an era of worship of materiality,chaotic thinking and the rise of subjective consciousness.There was a slight melancholy temperament in the literature and art of this period.Based on the mastery of a large number of text documents,image resources and other related literature on Victorian British painting,this article locates the overall creative trend of British Victorian.Analyze the sources of depression and artistic expression in Victorian British painting from various aspects of society,literary tradition,national character,and artist psychology.Summarizing and combing related representative works will help to deepen the understanding of the phenomenon of "depression" in Victorian British painting and grasp the activities of corresponding artists.This article mainly discusses the source,development trend,choice of subject matter and creative characteristics of melancholy mood in Victorian British painting through three chapters.The first part focuses on the sources of melancholy in Victorian British painting,and discusses it from historical and traditional reasons,social reasons and spiritual reasons.On the one hand,it is to explain that the melancholy mood in Victorian art is not born,it is historically traceable,and on the other hand,to demonstrate the environmental factors in which the artist's melancholy mood occurs.Paved the way for the analysis of various artistic features of melancholic painting.Based on this,the second chapter focuses on the classification of melancholy emotions in Victorian British paintings in the early,middle,and late periods,and what the artists mainly chose to express the melancholy of the soul.The third chapter summarizes the creative characteristics of this type of painting by analyzing the content,form and ideology of the representative works and comparing with the melancholic paintings in different time and space spans.Through the research in this article,we hope to achieve a multi-faceted understanding of the Victorian "depression"phenomenon.The epilogue summarizes the unique aesthetic value and practical significance of Victorian British melancholic mood painting.
