With the implement of the “English Curriculum Standard of General High School”(2017 edition),the purpose of English education has been transformed into cultivating students' essential characters and key competences for their future development.In order to help students obtain the essential character.Based on the concept of Key Competences of English Subject,this study takes the lesson " A master of nonverbal humour " as an example,exploring how to cultivate students' key competences by designing English reading lessons.In this way,a teaching plan that is oriented to the development of students' key competences could be formed,which might also provide inspiration of English reading teaching to some English teachers and educators.Guided by the Input Hypothesis,Output Hypothesis and the Key Competences of English Subject,English textbooks published by People's Education Press,the key competences of students of grade 2 and current reading teaching cases have been analyzed successively,after knowing the results,the corresponding lesson design principles and strategies are formulated.Before the implementation of this lesson study,teaching materials,students' learning background and teaching objectives are analyzed one by one,then after three lessons of design,implementation and reflection on the teaching of "A master of nonverbal humour".All the teaching objectives and its corresponding key competences have been successfully completed,and the last lesson plan is closest to the desirable teaching goals.By analyzing interviews and behaviors of students,the interest and enthusiasm of them have been improved,their way of thinking is also more active,but compared to the learning comprehension ability,the practice ability and knowledge transfer ability are more challengeable.This study inspire teachers if they were to design a reading plan on the Key Competences of English Subject,the notes below could be considered: First,the teachingcontents should be fit for students and ultimately help them achieve their highest level of thinking ability.Second,the teaching activities are supposed to be knowledgeable and interesting.Third,the teaching questions should be mainly focused on raising students concern about the communicative and enlightening aspects of language,and there are no“standard answers” to restrict them.To help teachers make some improvement,the following suggestions are given accordingly: Frist,teachers learn more knowledge of“Key Competences of English Subject”.Second,teachers arouse their awareness of using“Key Competences of English Subject” to guide teaching.Third,teachers strengthen their capacity of analyzing textbooks.
