This article uses Su Tong's early “Bildungsroman” as an example to discuss his acceptance of Salinger. Here, the so-called “early” refers to short stories written by writer Su Tong in the 1980 s and 1990 s.In the first chapter, this article first combines avant-garde literature with western modernist literature, expounds the relationship between the two,and then draws the connection between Su Tong and Salinger, the representative avant-garde writer.China ushered in a turning point in the 1980 s,and a large number of western literary theories and works were translated into China. This background provided Su Tong with an opportunity to accept Salinger.Under the inspiration of Salinger,Su Tong wrote a large number of Bildungsroman in his early days.Su Tong and Salinger both focused on the use of imagery in their works to convey the theme and render the atmosphere.Su Tong's acceptance of the images in Salinger's novels constitutes the main content of the second chapter. In addition to surface meanings, imagery can also be endowed with other philosophies as needed to achieve the effect of metaphorization.Due to the influence of Chinese and Western cultures, writers' experiences and other factors, even the same image can be interpreted with different meanings.Su Tong uses images such as colors, boats and fish to create a beautiful beauty, which is different from Salinger. The third chapter introduces Su Tong's acceptance of Salinger's early “Bildungsroman” from the narrative aspect.Salinger provided Su Tong with adolescent perspective on life, that is,a child perspective.Su Tong uses the children's perspective freely in his works. On the basis of Salinger,he enriches and develops it and presents the children's perspective in different ways.Holden in Salinger's novel is a runaway teenager.Su Tong accepted it and described the runaway of the characters. However, the two writers have different choices about runaway and return.Su Tong also accepted the circular pattern in Salinger's novels, which was not only used structurally, but also extended to the text content, which was beyond Salinger's.
