Family is the eternal theme of literature. In contemporary Chinese literary, Mo Yan and Su Tong are the typical representatives in writing family. For a long time, family novels are both realistic and narrative, which results in a pattern of single family narrative form and the prosaic narrative language. Mo Yan and Su Tong provide family novels with a spacious art space by means of imagery expression between realism and virtual. This thesis focuses on Mo Yan and Su Tong's family novels from the imagery, which analyzes and compares their novels from imagery's text building, aesthetic implication and Ideographic narrative. It explores their different styles, develops the study of family narrative in the new era and helps us understand the aesthetic standard, the literature creation and the philosophy. This article explains it in four aspects:Firstly, starting with the evolution of the "image" in China and the West, this thesis describes the definition and discussion of the "image" of the literary theorists, aesthetes and scholars in modern and ancient times in China and elsewhere. It explores narrative by means of imagery and family narrative by means of imagery on the basis of the definition of means of imagery, analyzes the outline of Mo Yan and Su Tong's family narrative by means of imagery, and clearly defines the content of the thesis. Secondly, this thesis explores Mo Yan and Su Tong's narrative by means of imagery from the construction of the image community and the use of the color image. On one hand, it draws and enumerates the representative imagery and clears their own imagery community from the study of Red Sorghum Family, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, Red Locust, The Family of Opium Poppy, Raise the Red Lantern, etc. On the other hand, it analyzes their color imagery, especially the use of "red "to compare their image. Then, relying on the concrete text of Mo Yan and Su Tong's family novels, it describes the imagery's transcendence, freedom and inclusiveness in family narrative from the writer's imagination of the history and subversion of the family narrative. It digs up the implied aesthetic implication of the text. At the same time, it helps us to understand the style and the idea of their family novels. Finally, the reasons why both of them narrated their stories by means of imagery were analysed through the historical background and the literary environment. And the reasons for their individual differences in style were explored in three aspects——the growing region, childhood memories and life experiences, and personal view of literary creation.
