As a leading third-generation English-speaking writer in Africa,Adichie carries on the tradition of African English literature, caring for and reflecting on the realities of Nigeria's plight from a small point of view with the slender strokes of a female writer. In her writing, the single narrative of Africa ceases to exist, breaking the world's stereotypical thinking about African stories. Her three full-length novels,Purple Hibiscus,Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, all about the lives and experiences of middle-class Nigerians, metaphorically show the cultural dilemmas and national development dilemmas facing Nigeria in the post-colonial era.The thesis adopts a combination of internal and external literary research, based on Adichie's novels, and the political and cultural context of a specific period in Nigeria,to analyze the successful use of metaphor and symbolism in the work through a careful reading of the text, systematic combing and case interpretation. At the same time,we compare the differences in the selection of the writer's imagery in different works, and explore the writer's value orientation and reflection on reality.Metaphor is an important rhetorical device in literature and plays an important role in the expression of the thematic meaning of the work;metaphor is an important aspect of the success of Adichie's work.In her full-length works, she places many emotions and reflections in a metaphorical ontology, with imagery, characters, narrative techniques, etc. The introductory essay describes the current state of research on Adichie and his works in academic circles at home and abroad, and indicates the content of this paper. The main text begins with an analysis of the work's imagery metaphors, and the titles of each novel are also chosen to be full of symbolic meaning, symbolic imagery that runs throughout the book, making the work full of metaphorical meaning. In addition,Adichie has selected some common imagery of life that metaphorically suggests the spiritual dilemmas facing Nigerian society in the post-colonial era.Secondly,in the three full-length novels,Adichie has shaped a series of vivid and diverse characters who have made different choices in the face of different life dilemmas in different historical periods. Finally,Adichie's use and choice of narrative techniques have been carefully designed, both in terms of narrative sequence and the choice of narrative perspective, which have a certain effect on the metaphorical expression of the work, demonstrating the author's determination to break the single story of Africa and his cultural responsibility.Metaphor,as a rhetorical device,is the process of projecting a perceived thing, thought, emotion, etc.onto another thing, imagery, symbol or word that is qualitatively different from it.Metaphor permeates all aspects of linguistic activity, especially in literary creation, and the use of metaphor in Adichie's novels plays an important role in enriching the themes of his works. This budding writer has been writing in her own way to reconstruct history, both in her retrospect of war and in her concern for national culture, reflecting her deep sense of historical responsibility and local concern, and reading the work of such a writer is crucial to our understanding of Nigeria,Africa and African literature and culture.
