Born from the Ottoman Empire, the Turkish Republic completed the political construction of the modern nation-state through Kemal reform, but Islam still permeated all aspects of the country. In the process of Turkish modernization, the game between secularism and Islam runs through it,and the headscarf issues are its outstanding performance. This paper takes the Turkish headscarf issues since the 1980 s as the research object, and analyzes cases of the headscarf issues in Turkish society to reveal the essence and impact of the headscarf issues. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter mainly analyzes the origin of the Turkish headscarf issues. In the pre-Islamic era,the custom of women wearing headscarves was determined by the natural and social environment of the Arabian Peninsula at that time;after the emergence of Islam, the Qur'an had standardized and institutionalized the doctrines of women wearing headscarves and had been throughout the Islamic Empire.Kemal established Turkish Republic, advocated secular reforms, encouraged women to take off headscarves and aligned with western society;during the multi-party era of the 1950 s,changes in the political sphere affected the diversification trend of women wearing headscarves. The rise of the Islamic revival movement in the 1970 s,the revival of Islamic culture subtly changed the concept of women, and women following the Islamic faith re-select to wear a headscarf;after the Islamist party entered Turkish politics, the headscarf was used as a tool to draw voters and given it a specific political significance. The second chapter mainly discusses the development of the Turkish headscarf issues since the 1980 s.After the military coup in 1980 and the Ozal era,the "Turkish-Islamic integration ideology" was pursued which promoted a comprehensive revival of Islam, and the constitutional foundation of secularism led to the promulgation of the headscarf ban;in the 1990 s,the headscarf issues continued to develop, with the examples of Tansu Ciller and the "Kavakci" incident;the headscarf issues since the 21 st century had mainly analyzed Leyla Sahin v.Turkey, the wearing of headscarves by government officials' wives and the Justice and Development Party's headscarf bill, pointing out that the headscarf issues remained the focus of Turkish political debate.Thedevelopment of the headscarf issues is constantly changing with the political changes in Turkey, which can be described as a "barometer" of Turkish political changes. The third chapter is a multi-dimensional commentary on the Turkish headscarf issues since the 1980 s.From the perspective of woman's rights, whether women wear or not wear a headscarf and their identity recognition are a manifestation of their consciousness, which is an important step towards fighting for their rights;from an ideological perspective, the dispute between Islamist and secularist around the headscarf issues is to achieve political interests, and both use the headscarf as a tool for their own rights and interests;as far as Turkey's modernization process is concerned, the headscarf issues are both an obstacle to Turkey's accession to the European Union and are closely related to democratic reforms. The changes on the headscarf issues since the 1980 s have reflected the progress of Turkish democratization, the political and cultural game around the headscarf issues have also reflected the tortuous nature of Turkey's democratization process. Conclusion after summarizing the contents of the above three chapters,it is pointed out that the change of the Turkish headscarf issues can be said to be a microcosm of the development of Turkish society.Compared with the headscarf issues of European and American countries, the Turkish headscarf issues have their own uniqueness. The Turkish headscarf issues involve many aspects, and the debate around the headscarf issues will still be an unavoidable discourse in Turkish society.
