Biographical literature attracts a wide range of readers because of its distinct characters, exciting plots and beautiful language. Its translated text, providing target readers with cultural background and social custom of the source language, serves as a bridge between Chinese and the Western culture.Based on the Chinese translation of Tara Westover's biographical novel Educated: A Memoir, this thesis attempts to explore the application of compensation theory in the translation of biographical literature.Given that the main feature of biographical literature rests on its factuality and literariness,it can be said that the translation should conform to the facts as well as the cultural background and literary value.Translation compensation aims to compensate the losses suffered in the process of translation,so as to ensure the complete transmission of information, meaning, cultural factors and aesthetic value. Therefore, translation compensation is feasible and applicable to guide this translation practice. The thesis introduces the translation project, describes the process of translation practice, reviews the developments of translation compensation theory both at home and abroad, and expounds the guidance of translation compensation theory on this translation practice from cultural, communicative and aesthetic levels. The author holds that choosing appropriate compensation strategies according to the text features can not only make up for the losses caused by the conversion of the two languages, but also restore the equivalence between the original text and the translation and show the artistic charm of western culture inthe Chinese translation.Through this thesis, the author hopes to provide some reference for future studies on the translation of biographical literature.
