The source text Educated: A Memoir adopted by this translation report is the maiden effort of Tara Westover.Tara attached much attention to depicting her stories in a family worshiping Mormonism and her struggle with leaving her family.Through the vivid portray of characters by means of dialogues, she not only exposed her change in thoughts and her parents’ Mormonism, but also displayed her growing course. However, the translator found it difficult to translate dialogues as there are many factors needed to consider and they are important in portraying characters. The author of this report used Tara’s memoir as translation material and discussed the dialogue translation in memoir from three aspects, namely characters’ physical world, mental world and social world under the guidance of Communicative Context Adaptation in an effort to convey characters’ mentality, relationship, changes in different periods and so on.In translating dialogues, the translator has to make adaptation by considering the speakers’ physical world, mental world and social world and using the translation skills of conversion and amplification, which includes adding modal particles, adverb and conjunction. It is hoped that the translation of thisbook and dialogue translation report can allow more readers to know even more stories in autobiography and more translators have more inspirations when they translate dialogues in autobiography. |
