Writing is a form of written expression,which can examine the students' comprehensive skills to convey information and retell life experience.It is also an important part of English teaching in compulsory education.However,in the practice of English writing teaching,many problems need to be solved,such as dull atmosphere in classroom,low participation rate of students,and sole and delayed feedback by teachers.Therefore,how to effectively improve students' writing ability has been a hot subject that English teachers have been studying and paying attention to.With the development and advancement of information technology in the field of teaching applications,tablet computers are favored by teachers and students.Tablet computers can provide students with rich resources and quick feedback,and they can also provide new teaching methods and more interactive mode for teachers.At the same time,the new "English Curriculum Standard" adds Viewing into the language skills and proposes a "multimodal" theory.Multimodal theory suggests that teachers can make full use of multimodal resources like whiteboards,cards,pictures,audio,animation,video clips and digital technology in English teaching.Those multimodal symbols can stimulate students' three main modes of perceiving,such as visual senses,auditory senses and kinaesthesia so as to improve the students' participation and interests,and promote the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching as well.Under such background,this study aims at investigating whether the application of tablets computer in English writing teaching can improve the students' competence.This five-month teaching experiment was conducted with 100 students in the second grade from two parallel classes in Kunming No.3 Middle School.Those junior high school students were taught by the same teacher.One class was chosen as the experimental group(EG),which was taught by using the tablets,and the other is control group(CG),which was taught in traditional writing mode without tablets.After collecting and analyzing writing scores of the experimental class and the control class before and after the experiment,and after discussing the result of the questionnaire on the students' attitude,the research results are as follows:1.Under the guidance of multimodal theory,the use of tablet teaching in English writing class has a positive impact on the improvement of junior middle school students' writing effect;2.The use of tablet in English writing class is conducive to stimulating students' writing enthusiasm.Therefore,students hold a positive attitude towards this teaching mode.The purpose of this research is to find the corresponding point of multimodal resources and English writing teaching.Under the guidance of bandura's observational learning theory and social cognition theory,and also combining with my own practice of writing teaching and the optimization and integration of tablet functions,the author presents a lesson based on multimodal theory.The writing lesson provides a specific case on application of tablet computer in Unit 7 Will people have robots ? This case sets a good example on tablet teaching practice,and also offers some ideas for front-line teachers to enrich their teaching with information technology.
