As the primary caretakers of most families around the globe, women have played a critical role in the development of the society. However, the common unfair treatment they have been suffering is out of proportion to their contributions. The society has now been putting more focus on the protection of their rights and interests.Brotopia:Breaking up the Boys' Club of Silicon Valley by Emily Chang not only introduces many cases in business management, but also reveals the sexual discrimination and hidden rules in the tech industry in Silicon Valley where men get to make all the rules. Some of its topics have also intrigued heated discussions in China. The book, published by Penguin/Portfolio in February 2018,has not been translated into Chinese yet.Despite the author's attitudes, the book mainly offers information by quoting interviewees and industrial statistics and thus counts as an informative text.It is concisely written and clearly structured. With its focus on business and technology,it contains massive proper names and abbreviations. The author also uses a large number of passive structures to maintain its objectivity.Translation, like other activities conducted by men,is fulfilled with its purpose(s)and the purpose always determines the translation methods. Thus, the translator adopts the Skopos theory as the guidance for the translation of the Source Text. The theory puts the skopos as the most important factor determining translation methods and asks translators to first consider the purpose and then the coherence. With discussion on the skopos and coherence rule, the report analyzes zero translation for some proper names and abbreviations and explicitation for passive structures under different contexts and circumstances.
