Shakespeare’s works has always been the focus of British and American literature study.Literature and the Renaissance Garden from Elizabeth I to Charles II:England’s Paradise written by the famous American scholar Amy L.Tigner argues that as an important place in literature,the garden embodied the Edenic ideal of early modern English politics,economics and national identity.In the second chapter,Shakespeare and anti-paradise,the author discusses Shakespeare’s representation of the garden and the plant imagery associated with the garden in the plays,and how Shakespeare described the garden as an imaginary monarchy with a national picture of England and gender metaphors.There is no doubt that this spatial paradigm of “two bodies of Kings” with profound meaning provides a new perspective for the study of Shakespeare both at home and abroad and has a high academic value.The original term “shift” of J.C.Catford,the most representative translation theorist of the applied linguistics school refers to the departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from the SL to TL.The translation shift theory derived from this idea can be divided into two parts: level shift and category shift,among which category shift can be specifically divided into class shift,unit shift,structure shift and intra-system shift.Translation shift theory attempts to solve translation problems from the micro level on the basis of careful segmentation of linguistic units,a large number of studies have shown that the theory has a strong guiding significance in the process of translation,but relatively a few studies have applied the theory to the translation of literary criticism.How this theory can guide specific behaviors in the process of translation of such text remains to be solved.This translation practice report selects the second chapter of the book as the translation material and conducts a translation report under the guidance of Catford’s translation shift theory.This report consists of five chapters: chapter one presents the background,significance and preparation of translation;the second chapter mainlyanalyzes the translation materials,including the introduction of the author of the source text,the type of the source text and the analysis of the language features;the third chapter summarizes the guiding theory and the research of the theory at home and abroad;the fourth chapter is case analysis.Under the guidance of translation shift theory,the author converts the level shifts into the shifts of adverbs and plural nouns.The class shifts are divided into the shift between nouns and verbs and the shift between prepositions and verbs.Unit shifts include the shift between lexis and phrases and the shift between phrases and sentences.The structure shifts refer to the shifts of compound sentences and passive voice.In the end,the author believes that this theory has important pragmatic value in guiding the translation of such texts,such as making the translated text more consistent with the linguistic characteristics of the target language and smoother to facilitate understanding.Finally,the author reflects on the shortcomings in this translation practice.
