A Report On Translation Practice Of Civil Aviation English Text Under The Guidance Of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory

In recent years,rapid development has been made in the civil aviation industry of China.C919 is dependently designed and developed as the second kind of China-made large passenger aircraft after y-10,displaying our country’s powerful development and manufacture.However,Airbus,Boeing companies and some engine manufacturers are established earlier with the corresponding technologies more advanced,and however we start this work later with much work to be done for its improvements.Therefore,our country should communicate with western countries,as well as continue to lean from them and draw upon their experiences.It is vital to translate documents and articles on civil aviation.This report is composed of six chapters.It firstly introduces the background and significance of the study;then the third chapter analyzes the characteristics of civil aviation English text from the perspective of syntactic features and lexical features and covers the research achievements made by translators at home and abroad;the fifth chapter as the main body deals with the application of the Catford’s translation shift theory to the typical translation cases on civil aviation English,analyzes cases from the level shift and category shift and the translator select relevant translation strategies according to the reality;finally,the author concludes the whole thesis,points out the limitations of the report and also proposes some suggestions.The four translation texts chosen as a technology-oriented text are about civil aviation English and belong to info-text which will give top priority to deliver the meaning instead of the total formal equivalence.For this reason,it is acceptable to translate civil aviation English by employing the Catford’s translation shift theory.The author has encountered many difficulties in the process of translation,such as nominalization structure,long and difficult sentences and terminologies.This translation report aims to solve the practical problems by applying the Catford’s translation shift theory in translating civil aviation English text so that the translated text will be more expressive and in line with Chinese expression.More importantly,translation experiences drawn upon will offer guidance for corresponding translation and references to the persons who work in civil aviation industry.
