Translation is a cross-lingual and cross-cultural activity. When translators understand and translate the source text, they must associate the information in the source text with the culture in the target language. However, there must be cultural differences between different languages. At the same time, the source language and the target language may belong to different language families,so there will always be losses or distortions in translation. As the intermediary between the two different cultures, the translator is obliged to adopt appropriate methods to clearly express the illocutionary forces to the target readers, and compensate for the losses in the translation,so that the target readers can obtain accurate and consistent understanding of the original text. This report took Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 of A History of Scotland as the main study object, and explored how to reproduce the original style through translation compensation strategies and techniques under the guidance of translation compensation theory. It started with an introduction to the author, the original text and the selected text.In Chapter Two,the process of translation was introduced, including preparation before translation, difficulties in initial translation, and translation tools. Then Chapter Three discussed the translation theory that guided this translation practice, from the overview of translation compensation theory to the necessity, principles and techniques of compensation. In Chapter Four, under the guidance of translation compensation theory, the translator discussed specific examples in the translation practice from the lexical level, the grammatical level, and the discourse level. Then in Chapter Five, the author recalled the difficulties and coping methods in translation. Finally,Chapter Six summarized experience and shortcomings in practice.Through this translation practice and research on translation compensation theory, this translation report hopes to bring some inspiration to future research on translationcompensation and provide certain reference significance to the development of translation compensation theory.
