English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011)clearly stipulates that junior high school students should read more than 150,000 words by extracurricular reading.Therefore,how to effectively carry out extracurricular reading is an issue of great importance for English teachers.The spread of the English graded reading provides new inspirations for English teachers to carry out extracurricular reading.In November 2016,the first English Graded Reading Standards for Chinese Primary and Secondary School Students(Experimental Draft)was officially published in China,Which provided theoretical basis for many English teachers to carry out the English graded reading and prompted many Chinese schools to carry out the English graded reading to improve students' English reading literacy.Through interviews with teachers,classroom observation and questionnaire surveys,this paper investigates the current situation,effect and existing problems of the implementation of the English graded reading in Hainan S Junior High School.Through data collection and analysis,the main findings are as follows:(1)In terms of the implementation of the English graded reading,the English teachers of Hainan S Junior High School use the Sunshine English Graded Reading as an English graded reading textbook.They set up lessons for the English graded reading and implement the English graded reading from both in-class teaching and after-class guidance.In class,teachers mainly use group sharing,summarizing,thinking and evaluating to carry out the English graded reading.Students are divided into groups after class so that teachers can monitor students to carry out the English graded reading and adopt a reading scoring system to evaluate students' performance in the English graded reading.(2)In terms of its effect,most students believe that the English graded reading has a positive effect on their reading character and reading ability.(3)There still exist the following problems in the implementation of the English graded reading: teachers' insufficient guidance on students' reading strategies,the class type and teaching model of the English graded lesson is single;teachers' evaluation of students' English graded reading is not comprehensive.Finally,according to the problems existing in the implementation of the English graded reading,this paper explores the causes and proposes corresponding suggestions,in hopes of helping English teachers to effectively implement the English graded reading and enhancing students' English reading literacy.
