A Report On The Translation Of An Illustrated Handbook Of Guangdong Herbal Tea (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Hermeneutics Translation Theory

With the development of the Guangdong,Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area,Lingnan culture,as the internal driver of Guangdong's reform and opening up and the strong cultural ties of the Maritime Silk Road,will greatly promote the internationalization of the Guangdong,Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area.The translation work of Guangdong herbal tea cannot only help a lot in promoting the publicity of Lingnan culture as a great soft power for the local development but also play an significant role in promoting the international spread of traditional Chinese medicine culture.Based on the excerpts of An Illustrated Handbook of Guangdong Herbal Tea: Practical Healthy Recipes by Shi Xuguang,a professor from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine,this translation practice report is processed with the hermeneutics translation theory of George Steiner as the theoretical foundation.First,“trust” is the first step in George Steiner's fourfold translation motion.After reading An Illustrated Handbook of Guangdong Herbal Tea: Practical Healthy Recipes,the author believes that the book has a comprehensive introduction to the historical development of Guangdong herbal tea and all the recipes,with high cultural and medical value,worthy of the author's translation of it,which fully reflects the author's trust in the original text.Second,the author aggresses the original text from the language level and the cultural level,breaking through the limitation of language form to obtain the essence of the original text.Third,in order to get a better translation,the author incorporates the content of the original text on the basis of understanding and translates it by the appropriate expression into target text.Fourth,the author adopts annotation and amplification to compensate the lost massage in target language and culture,so as to realize the balance between the source language and the target language,and bring the Guangdong herbal tea and Lingnan culture to the world.The whole process of translation shows that the author has followed the fourfold translation motion in the practice,which includes trust,aggression,incorporation and compensation.Through the translation practice of herbal tea,the author obtains the following findings:First,understanding is the key but difficult part in translation of herbal tea recipes.The characteristics of the text require translator to get good preparation before translation,which is crucial to the translation.Second,the translation of herbal tea recipe is a complicate process instead of a simple language conversion.The historical and literary nature of the language requires translators to adopt different translation strategies according to specific situations.Third,the final formation of all translations must get compensation.The study on the language features is a must in the translation of herbal tea recipe.The translator needs to grasp the connotation and the philosophy of the original text.They should not only emphasize the accuracy of the information transformation,but also attach great importance to the cultural significance to find the best balance between the translation.As a result,the conceptual and cultural losses in translation can be reduced to a minimum so that the reader of target language can accept the herbal tea recipe under broader Chinese cultural background.The author hopes,through the practice,to provide some valuable references for the translation practice and research of this kind of text,broaden the scope of research on translation practice under the guidance of hermeneutics translation theory and make a contribution to the spread of Lingnan culture and traditional Chinese medicine culture in China.
