English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017)puts forward new requirements for English teachers in senior high schools, and teachers should focus on developing students' key competencies and further cultivate students' English comprehensive ability.Homework is an important part of teachers' teaching link,an extension and supplement of teaching, and it plays an important role in cultivating students' key competencies. However, the survey shows that most senior high school English homework tends to be simple and mechanical, which is not conducive to the cultivation of students' key competencies.Based on this problem, this paper studies senior high school English homework in the context of key competencies and aims to explore how to cultivate students' key competencies through English homework. This paper selects 150 students and 20 English teachers from a senior high school in Yantai as the research participants and uses questionnaires and interviews to do the research work.In order to make up for the shortcomings of the questionnaire, five English teachers and five students are interviewed. In addition,in order to study more clearly the current situation of senior high school English homework,50 copies of English homework assigned by an English teacher are collected as samples. Here are the three research questions in this paper:(1)What are the attitudes of teachers and students towards senior high school English homework in the context of key competencies?(2)What are the general situation and existing problems in the amount, type and evaluation of senior high school English homework in the context of key competencies?(3)What are the impacts of senior high school English homework on cultivating students' key competencies?Through data analysis, the following findings are obtained:(1)Most teachers have a correct attitude towards senior high school English homework in the context of key competencies, and they can focus on cultivating students' autonomous learning habits and improving their learning ability. Some teachers do not have a thoroughunderstanding of this and still regard improving students' grades as the main purpose of assigning English homework. Most students have a positive attitude towards English homework and can realize the importance of English homework for English learning. Most students can take English homework seriously and they are interested in English homework. However, some students are not very interested in the current English homework.(2)Most students think that teachers assign too much English homework and it takes a long time to complete their English homework. The amount of English homework is large and the time allocation is not reasonable.English homework is mainly written exercises, there is more recitation and dictation homework and less practical and funny homework. The type of English homework is not rich enough and lacking in flexibility. Most teachers still use simple scores or grades to evaluate students' English homework.Students rarely have the opportunity to participate in their own and classmates' homework evaluation. The main body of English homework is single and the evaluation method is not flexible enough.(3)Although the study shows that English homework has a positive impact on cultivating students' key competencies, especially on the improvement of their linguistic competence and learning ability,it is undeniable that English homework has some negative impacts on cultivating students' key competencies.Teachers pay too much attention to the learning of basic knowledge and ignore the cultural teaching and thinking training of students, which leads to students' low learning interest and low learning efficiency. When the importance of basic language knowledge is overemphasized, and there appear the problems of too much English homework assigned and single type of English homework, students' cultural awareness and thinking quality will not be improved, and even the development of their linguistic competence and learning ability will be negatively affected, which is not conducive to the cultivation of students' key competencies. Therefore,a scientific and reasonable assignment of English homework is very important for the cultivation of students' key competencies.
