English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(2017)clearly points out that senior high school English curriculum should give full play to the educational function of the curriculum,develop the students' English key competencies and carry out the fundamental task of moral education.Therefore,teachers should change their teaching concepts to cultivate students' English key competencies.Homework,as the extension of classroom teaching,is one of the main ways to achieve the goal of English teaching,which helps reinforce and improve what students have learned in class.However,in teaching practice,there are many problems in English homework,such as a large amount of English homework,the single form in homework design and students' low interests in English homework,which are not helpful for students to develop their English key competencies.It is essential,therefore,to do the research on the design of English homework based on English key competencies.This research takes students of two classes(one is as control class,the other is as experimental class)in Grade Two of Tianshui No.1 Senior High School as research subjects.Questionnaire survey method and interview method are adopted to investigate the present situation of English homework of senior high school in the new era.The results show that the problems of English homework in senior high school include being too difficult,the single form and too much language practicing.To solve these problems,a one-semester teaching experiment is conducted to investigate whether English homework based on English key competencies can raise students' interests in English homework and improve their English achievements.In the process of teaching experiment,the control class adopts the traditional English homework types and the experimental class adopts the new English homework types.After a semester of teaching experiment,through the comparison of pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire,it can be found that English homework based on English key competencies can raise students' interests in English homework;and the post-test result proves that the English homework based on English key competencies is beneficial to improve the students' English achievements.Accordingly,the principles and examples of the English homework design based on English key competencies are put forward.The principles of English homework design include interesting principle,selective principle,cooperative principle and communicative principle.Combined with the New Senior English for Chinese Students' Book five and six of People's Education Press,some English homework examples are designed to provide some references for the senior high school English teachers to effectively design English homework.
