The Translation And Dissemination Of Modernist Drama By The Eastern Miscellany(1920-1929)

As the large-scale comprehensive periodical with the longest publication time in the modern history of China,The Eastern Miscellany had a large number of texts related to Western modernist drama.However,previous studies have mostly started from the aspects of communication history,intellectual history,history of education,legal history,economic history,etc.,while literature studies were relatively weak.The important value of modernist drama in The Eastern Miscellany is ignored.On the basis of intensive reading of the dramatic tests,this paper makes a detailed analysis of the theoretical articles,translated scripts and original plays of The Eastern Miscellany from 1920 to 1929,and makes some supplements for the drama research of The Eastern Miscellany.First of all,this paper sorts out the articles in The Eastern Miscellany that introduced dramatic thoughts theories of symbolism,expressionism,and futurism in the 1920 s.The introduction and interpretation of the characteristics of different schools,representative writers and their representative works by the magazine are analyzed.Based on The Eastern Miscellany's own position of Cultural Conservatism,the trade-offs and subjective tendencies of different modernist schools in the magazine's translation process are discussed.This paper affirms that the magazine not only continued DU Ya-quan's reflection on material civilization in1920 s,but also integrated this reflection with the characteristics of modernism.Secondly,this paper analyzes the theme and artistic features of the translated scripts in The Eastern Miscellany,and explores the discussion and answers to the topics of women's marriage experience,belief system and personal existence in the translation activities of the magazine in the past decade,as well as the unremitting input to the artistic skills of different schools of modernism.This paper affirms that the concern for personal spiritual life of The Eastern Miscellany coincides with the subjective feelings of human being expressed by modernism drama trend of thought.Finally,based on the consistent concept of translation of The Eastern Miscellany,this paper studies the influence of modernism drama trend of thought on the original dramas of The Eastern Miscellany and the aesthetic psychology and acceptance of Chinese audiences to the modernist dramas in a specific era from Hong Shen's adapted plays.From an academic point of view,this paper aims to find out the positive significance that The Eastern Miscellany insisted on the translations of modernist drama related texts in the context of the local mainstream creation chose realistic drama in the same period.
