Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning.Vocabulary teaching in foreign countries is based on phonics teaching.However,there is a lack of English learning environment in our country,and the traditional English vocabulary teaching methods are dull and single,which leads to mechanical memory,spelling difficulties and other problems in vocabulary learning in primary schools.Phonics can help students pronounce English words correctly and spell English words effectively by establishing the corresponding relationship between letters or letter combinations and their pronunciations.So it can improve the efficiency of students' vocabulary learning.Based on Krashen's Input Hypothesis Theory and Theory of Learning Transfer,this study applies phonics to teaching practice to answer the following questions:(1)Can phonics improve students' word pronunciation ability?(2)Can phonics improve students' word spelling ability?This study is mainly conducted via tests and teaching experiment.The participants are two parallel classes in the fifth grade of Huying primary school in Shouguang City.They are randomly divided into the experimental class(N = 37)and the control class(N= 37).In the teaching experiment,the teacher mainly applied phonics to teach vocabulary in the experimental class,while in the control class,the teacher used the traditional teaching method to teach vocabulary.The students' word pronunciation abilities and word spelling abilities were tested before and after the experiment to find the difference between the effect of phonics and the traditional vocabulary teaching method on students' vocabulary learning.All of the data were analyzed via SPSS22.0.The results show that phonics has a positive effect on students' English vocabulary learning:(1)Phonics can improve students' word pronunciation ability significantly.After the experiment of phonics teaching,students in the experimental class have established a correspondence between letters,letter combinations and their pronunciations.Through continuous training from sounds to graphics,and fromgraphics to sounds,they can connect the sounds and graphics skillfully,so they can pronounce the word correctly and easily.(2)Phonics can improve students' word spelling ability effectively.In the same way,the students in the experimental class have received a lot of training in the connection of sound and graphics.After hearing the pronunciation of a word,students can transform the sound into graphic skillfully too,so they can write the word down easily.
