A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Excerpts From Hunan Local Literature And Xiangchu Culture

Xiangchu culture is an important part of Chinese culture.As is the object of representation in Hunan local literature,it has not only influenced the spiritual temperament of Hunan people,but also bred a group of Hunan local writers and forms a literary school with local characteristics.By translating the texts about Xiangchu culture and Hunan local literature,we can expand the international influence of Hunan culture,and strengthen the exchange between Chinese culture and world culture.This is report based on the translation practice of the chapter “Belief in the Deities and Wizards” of Hunan Local Literature and Xiangchu Culture authored by Liu Hongtao.As a cultural informative text,the source text has the dual features of literature and academic work,that are rich in both literary and specialized terms.In the light of the theory of cultural functional equivalence,the report analyzes the English translation of culture-loaded words,social culture-loaded words,and religious culture-loaded words.Susan Bassnett's cultural functional equivalence theory holds that the cultural factors behind the language should be taken into account in the process of translation to achieve lexical equivalence and functional equivalence by means of cultural transformation.The realization of lexical equivalence should follow the strategy of“substitution priority” as well as foreignization and provide appropriate corresponding words in the translation of culture-loaded words;if the appropriate words can not be found,the annotation method can be used for translation.As to the realization of functional equivalence,consideration should be given to the purpose and role of the text.Specifically,in the translation of linguistic culture-loaded words,due to the large number of dialects and idioms and rich cultural connotations in the source text,it is necessary to adopt literal translation and free translation for the purpose of spreading Xiangchu culture and the strategy of “substitution priority”.It is relatively easy to find corresponding words in the translation of social culture-loaded words,so the strategy of “substitution priority” is adopted,supplemented by free translation,literaltranslation and annotation.In order to convey the cultural connotation of religious culture-loaded words,the strategy of foreignization is mainly used,and literal translation and transliteration are given as far as possible from a cultural perspective.Based on the translation practice,this report makes an in-depth analysis of the features of cultural informative texts and summarizes the translation strategies,principles and methods of culture-loaded words translation guided by the cultural functional equivalence theory,with an aim to provide reference for the translators who translate the same type of texts and the application of the theory of cultural functional equivalence.
