This is a report on the translation of The Digital Humanities and the Digital Modern written by James Smithies, which was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2017.As the director of King's Digital Laboratory,James Smithies has served as a senior lecturer in the School of Digital Humanities at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and as the deputy director of the UC CEISMIC Digital Archives. This work is a collection from James Smithies regarding research theory, research methods and practice in the field of digital humanities. The selected chapter with a total of about 11,000 English words was translated.Based on an analysis of the entire project process and typical examples, the translator explores the issues that must be taken seriously in a translation project: how to ensure translation quality and progress through pretranslation preparation and process management, and how to reasonably convey the discourse information of the source text.Functionalist translation, combined with Skopos theory and text typology, was introduced as the theoretical foundation for translating the selected text.In order to accurately understand the original text, the translator collected relevant documents and made a glossary before translation. After translation, the translator strengthened the process of proofreading and modification,so as to ensure its quality.Focusing on the key and difficult points,he adopted translation strategies such as literal translation and interpretation to ensure the cognition, accuracy and rigorousness of academic discourse.Meanwhile,he used integrated approaches to ensure that the translation conforms to the habit of Chinese expression.Power Point was introduced to translate figures that cannot be edited, which has proved to be a practical way to translate figures. The translation practice report under the guidance of functionalist translation theory is of certain theoretical and practical significance to the translation of digital humanities academic texts and conducive to the translation and dissemination of digital humanities knowledge.
