This report is based on the E-C translation practice in The Digital Humanities and The Digital Modern(Chapter 5).In this chapter,Smithies analyzed humanities cyberinfrastructure and emphasized the significance of its development for humanities research. This is a popular science book that may throw some new light on the domestic research in this field.Guided by the functional equivalence theory, the translator selected appropriate translation strategies and techniques to achieve functional equivalence from the perspectives of vocabulary, syntax, discourse and rhetorical devices. This report consists of five chapters detailing the whole process of the translation practice.Chapter one is an introduction to the translation project, introducing the author of the source text, the selected text and its significance.Chapter two is mainly about the translation process, including pre-translation preparation like stylistic analysis of the source text and the tool selection, tasks in the while-translation stage such as the translation of long and complicated sentences and the collection of cases and proofreading in post-translation.Chapter three introduces functional equivalence theory. It points out the importance of functional equivalence in translation from three aspects: contextual consistency, dynamic equivalence and formal equivalence, and the acceptability of target readers. And it also analyzes the applicability of this theory in the translation of popular science text.Chapter four is the detailed case analysis. It describes how to achieve semantic equivalence, cohesion and coherence by flexibly using literal translation, free translation and other translation strategies,as well as translation techniques such as addition, omission and inversion.Chapter five summarizes the gains and limitations of this translation practice. The translator finds that the translation of popular science text, rather than a simple conversion between the two languages, should be an accurate display of its information and style with clear logic and good readability. |
