Paulo Coelho(1947--)is a famous Brazilian writer whose language of works is poetic and philosophical.The contents of his works involve religion,magic,mysterious legends,etc.with kaleidoscopic elements.Veronika Decides to Die is a passionate work that explores the meaning of life,the expressions of the novel are clear and honest,the story is ingenious and twisted,and the connotation of the work is profound,which inspires people to find their true self with strong power.Based on Foucault's madness discourse power concept,this thesis explores the power struggle between the marginalized people and the discourse power controllers by interpreting the madness images of the protagonists in Veronika Decides to Die.In the power struggle of individual rationality and public rationality,people resist rational oppression and realizes self-salvation.To begin with,the shaping of images of madness in Veronika Decides to Die,to discuss the unreliable medical authority,so as to explore the different types of mad images created by unreliable medical authority are proposed initiatively.In the eyes of other people,madmen exist as irrationality,uniqueness and anti-morality.Then the madman surrenders to medical science and the mainstream,they define and recognize self by neglecting social rules and escaping from social reality.Secondly,this thesis discussed the oppression of the marginalized people in the mainstream population,and explored the physical and mental dual oppression of the mainstream population.Physically,through the confinement system and various cruel treatments,the madmen are directly oppressed;spiritually,by strengthening the public's right of speech,the effect of eliminating the individual will of the mad person is achieved.Finally,this thesis explored the self-redemption of the individual rationality represented by the madmen.The madman's self-consciousness awakens,discovers self-physical consciousness,reshapes the value of existence;in the process of resisting public reason,returns to human morality and shapes the aesthetics of existence.The novel is researched and analyzed based on Foucault's madness discourse power,in order to enrich the study of Paul Coelho's novels and the study of the madness discourse power view to a certain extent,deepen the interpretation of Paulo Coelho's novels,and madness study.At the same time,the application of theory and text interpretation have certain practical significance for the study of literary works,so as to deeply excavate the emotional tension contained in the works,motivate people to constantly oppose power oppression,awaken their own consciousness,and call people to start from caring for themselves and construct themselves.The aesthetics of life returns to the inner world of people and returns to poetic living.
