The thesis is a translation report, and the source text is excerpted from the first part of The Fifth Mountain written by Paulo Coelho, with a total word number of 13000 or so.This part is the most basic part of the novel. It describes such a story: in the face of the Tyre Princess Jezebel’s religious persecution,Elijah obeyed God’s will and escaped to Zarephath where he met a widow, after which the two people fall in love. The good times didn’t last long, because the widow was killed in the war.At this point,Elijah who had been pious before began to suspect God,go against and challenge God.This novel describes Elijah’s struggle process of introspection when facing confusion.Under the guidance of Professor Guo Jianzhong’s theory, the report takes the English version of The Fifth Mountain as the source text and aims at investigating and analyzing the problems encountered in the process of translation in order to retain the exotic culture as much as possible by using coherent and intelligible language. The practice report consists of four parts, which are introduction, description of translating process, case analysis and summary. The first part is the introduction of the source texts, which mainly introduces the novel’s author and the selected portions of the text. The second part is to describe the translation process, which contains three parts: preparation before translation, process of translation, and revision after translation. The third part is the case analysis, which describes translation difficulties and the translation methods used in the translation practice. The difficult points refer to the treatment of fictional dialogues to coincide with characters’ identity and the specific environment. The translator adopts the translation methods of negation, amplification, substitution and restruction to make the translation easy to understand. The last part is the summary of the translation experience and unsolved problems in the process of translation. At present, the Chinese version of The Fifth Mountain hasn’t been published. As a result,on the one hand, the translator hopes to improve her translation ability by translating practice, and on the other hand, the books written byPaulo Coelho,as the alchemist of millions of readers, can give people the baptism of the soul. The translator hopes more Chinese readers get to know this contemporary writer and understand the true meaning of life by reading his books.
