Translating Chinese literature plays an extremely important role in the process of Chinese culture going to the world.Modal particles are very often used in Chinese works of literature. However, the studies of translation of modal particles are rare. The theory of communicative translation was proposed by Newmark in 1981.The purpose is to "try to make the effect of the translation on the target readers the same as the original text on the source readers".Communicative translation was a receptor-oriented and communicative-centered translation method.Audience response and text communication function should be the primary considerations.Modal Particles "ne" is profusely used in the dialogues in Snow.To achieve ideal communicative effect, all of “ne”s in Snow are put in five moods: doubts, rumors, exclamation, statements and discredit.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, strategies are suggested such as free translation, the addition translation, the non-translation or nationalization, adjusting the order, adding modifiers, changing the part of speech,re-regulating the formal structure, improving the logic, and applying common English vocabulary. To express the interrogative tone,it should be combined and understood with the words preceding it;to express exclamation, interjection or non-translation can be applied, together with an exclamation mark at the end of the sentence;to express rumors, question marks should be used;to express the tone of statement, free translation and provincial translation can be used;to express the tone of discredit, the previous adverbs of discredit can be used. The strategies suggested are based on the differences in culture and expression between English and Chinese. The strategies are the outcome of centering on the target reader instead of the original content. This way, various moods of “ne” are naturally expressed,so that the translation achieves the purpose of communication. The application of the theory of communicative translation to approach the translation of "ne" in the dialogues of Snow provides reference for relevant practice of translation.
