Shi Mengying's Seal Script

Seal script in Song Dynasty is still a weak link in academic research today.Although its development is not as colorful as that of Qing Dynasty,it also has a short-term revival.During this short-term revival,there were both the policy influences and the efforts of some excellent seal calligraphers.Shi Mengying is one of the representative calligraphers at that time.Based on the background of Shi Mengying's time and his special status as a monk,this thesis analyzes why Shi Mengying gained fame in the early Song Dynasty.Combined with the literature of Shi Mengying's tablet inscriptions,this thesis makes a new research on the life of Shi Mengying and the specific situation of his mentoring relationship,and makes an in-depth analysis about some questions on Shi Mengying's tablet inscriptions raised by later generations.The author finds that there are some biases on Shi Mengying from later generations' comments.It is not true that there are a series of problems in the use of characters in Shi Mengying's Seal Script Thousand Character Tablet.There is also a lack of accurate understanding of the two tablet inscriptions,Eighteen Style Seal Script Tablet and the Character Source Tablet beside the Seal Script Catalogue.Even in the current academic research results on ShiMengying,there are some similar problems.For example,the author re examined the integrity of the existing Eighteen Style Seal Script Tablet and the version issue of the Character Source Tablet beside the Seal Script Catalogue,and found that the existing Eighteen Style Seal Script Tablet is not the "original stone" in the academic circles nowadays;Shi Mengying wrote the Character Source Tablet beside the Seal Script Catalogue should be based on the version of Shuowen published by Li Yangbing.Shi Mengying learns from Li Yangbing mostly when do the seal script,but not limited to Li Yangbing.From the perspective of some seal character processing methods,Shi Mengying also takes examples of ancient Chinese characters.In reality,there are some seal characters that were first seen in Shi Mengying's inscriptions,but they are not so much "fabrication" as innovation,because the influence of these seal characters has been continuing nowadays,which indirectly shows that some seal characters created by Shi Mengying are in line with the development law of seal characters.Finally,the author combs the influence of Shi Mengying's seal script in later generations,and re-recognize the historical value of Shi Mengying in the history of seal script development.
