Scientific discourse features coherence in logic and clarity in expression.Generally,most logical relationships in such discourses are represented through explicit logical connectors.But there are also logic relations that are implicit,with no connectors to indicate them explicitly.Therefore,translators need to identify and infer such relations so as to convey the original logic,enhancing the coherence of the translation.This paper discusses the explicitation of the deep or implicit logical relationship within a sentence,based on the translation of Rumaila Field Wellbore Stability Study,through a combination of theoretical analysis and case studies.Firstly,the relationship between the deep structure and the surface structure of a sentence is discussed.Then techniques are proposed for the explicitation of such deep structures.In case studies,the linguistic tree diagram and kernel sentences are used to analyze the deep structure of the sentence as the basis for explicitation.With reference to the logical features of the translation at issue,this paper focuses on explicitation in three aspects,i.e.,logic explicitation,coherence explicitation and conversion.Logical explicitation involves adding logical connectives or abstract nouns.Coherence explicitation is achieved by filling in the omitted grammatical parts and pointing out the object of pronoun.Conversion means the convert logic relation of surface structure to its underlying logic and conversion of voice.This study is aimed to show that explicitation,as inevitable in translation,is actually also a necessity in the process.Tree diagramming provides an effective tool for translators to better analyze the deep structure so that they can clarify the relationship between various parts and perform the explicitation process to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation. |
