In recent years, with the rapid development of modern society and the acceleration of life pace, people are overburdened and stressed out,and the mental health problems have become increasingly prominent.More and more people are suffering from anxiety due to excessive psychological pressure. The translator chooses The Anatomy of Anxiety written by psychiatrist Ellen Vora as the translation material. This book is a popular science book about mental health. It mainly popularizes the definition, causes, effects and countermeasures of anxiety to readers.Characterized by scientificity, popularization and entertainment, the book is a self-rescue guide for people to overcome anxiety. Its translation can help Chinese readers correctly understand and deal with anxiety, thus improving mental health and promoting the healthy development of body and mind.Explicitation is not only a common phenomenon in translation, but also a translation strategy. It can effectively help overcome the translation obstacles caused by linguistic and cultural differences in translation. The concept of explicitation was first put forward by Vinay and Darbelnet, later enriched and developed by many scholars. It refers to clearly expressing the obscure and implicit information or the information that can be inferred from the original text during the translation. From the perspectives of obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation and pragmatic explicitation, and in light of the characteristics of popular science texts, this paper explores the application of explicitation strategy in the Chinese translation of The Anatomy of Anxiety, and summarizes some specific translation techniques of explicitation applicable to popular science texts, with a view to providing reference for the translation of such texts. The report finds that the explicitation strategy can make the translation easy to understand, which is in line with the purpose of popularizing scientific knowledge of popular science texts, and thus is applicable for the translation of such texts.Obligatory explicitation can be aimed at the translation of grammatical markers, words with figurative meaning and long and difficult sentences. The translation techniques of explicitation adopted are addition, paraphrase, and division and reorganization.Optional explicitation can be used for the translation of abstract expressions, implied information, implicit logic relations and pronouns. The translation techniques of explicitation adopted are mainly the specification according to the context, amplification, addition of conjunctions and clarification of reference by shifting cohesive devices.Pragmatic explicitation can be used for the translation of terminologies,culture-loaded words and idioms, and the translation techniques adopted are annotation and paraphrase. |
