Research On The Translation Strategies Of Adverbs From The Perspective Of Discourse Analysis

Fueling Culture: 101 Words for Energy and Environment is an energy humanities collection published by Fordham University.It chooses 101 keywords in the energy field,discussing the relationship between energy and human beings,the development history of energy,the impact of energy on human values,the development of social civilization etc..The essays use an interdisciplinary method,drawing on literature and cultural studies,and bring together scholars and practitioners from around the world to understand energy in the framework of the humanities.The project mainly selects seven key words for translation: “renewable energy”,“energy curse”,“energopolitics”,“demand”,and “future”.There are obvious terms in the field of political economics,philosophy,energy and humanities in translation,which poses great challenges to the translator.The theoretical basis of this thesis is discourse analysis theory first proposed by American structuralist linguist Z·S Harris.On the basis of objective statements,the energy humanities discourse focuses on expressing certain viewpoints and transmitting relevant information,so as to achieve the purpose of conveying correct energy-related values.In a sense,the application of adverbs in this discourse is very important for conveying these values.Therefore,this thesis takes the adverbs translation as the research object,and believes that the translation of three kinds of adverbs—conjunctive adverbs,adjunct adverbs and commentary adverbs in the translation project are of great significance to the cohesion,coherence and information delivery of the discourse.This project takes the cohesion,coherence and informativeness standards in discourse analysis as the overall guidance,and applies the corresponding standards to analyzing the translation of three types of adverbs in the text,so as to come up with desirable translation skills.Through the analysis of example sentences,the translator explores such techniques as literal translation,extension,division,amplification,and functional shift etc.in making sure the cohesion,coherence and the delivery of information in the discourse.Hopefully,this report can be conducive to the translation of interdisciplinary energy humanities works.
