| Throughout his life,Yu Guangzhong(1928-2017)took several trips to America,of which three spanned longer than the others. In 1958,he paid his first visit and studied British and American poetry and modern art in the University of Iowa. The second time was in 1964 when he was invited by the State Department to give lectures in America for the following two years.Later in 1969,he was invited to Colorado as a foreign curriculum advisor in the Department of Education and a visiting professor at Temple Bell College for two years.During his three trips to the USA,Yu wrote a total of 56 poems, which were later complied into the poem collection of "Halloween"(31,1960),"Percussion Music"(19,1969),"White Jade Bitter Gourd"(the first 6,1974).Compared with the poetry creation in the periods in Taipei,Hong Kong and kaohsiung, the period in America exposes the poet to foreign culture, which not only facilitates the integration of the essence of Chinese culture and Western culture in his poetry but also spurs the process of his realisation of spiritual identity and of the change of his poetry style. In his first trip to America,Yu Guangzhong went through the spiritual dilemma of“being a foreigner” resulted from culture shock and learned about western modern painting in depth, both of which contributed to his trial on poetic language. In his second trip, the current American cultural trend and his journey had an impact on the transformation of his poetry style. In his last trip,Yu Guangzhong observed and contemplated American rock music and mass communication, which gradually made his poems mature and integrated. The present paper focuses on the poems written by Yu Guangzhong during his trips to America, attempting to analyse and figure out the relationships among the development of his poetry at this period, his cognition of American society, and some external factors influencing his poetry.Based on this,it also intends to explore the reasons attributing to the change in Yu Guangzhong’s poetry style and the influences of those poems written during the period in America from various perspectives. |
