The original text of the project is selected from the first chapter of The Lieutenant written by Kate Grenville,a famous Australian writer. This novel tells the story of a lieutenant from British Royal Marines,Rooke, who arrived in New South Wales,British colony in the 18 thcentury. And the friendship between him and the Aboriginal emerged in that place. The translation of The Lieutenant into Chinese helps Chinese readers understand Australian history and broaden the mind.Besides, the author has a solid foundation in writing. The characters are portrayed exquisitely, and there are a lot of authentic expressions. This translation practice is guided by Toury's descriptive translation studies, and applies translation norms in the cases. Thus, the translator's translation behavior has a certain basis, and a standard translation could be obtained.According Toury's theory, translation behavior is ruled by norms.During this translation procession, the translator settles the practical examples with the application of Toury's initial norms, preliminary norms and operational norms.Furthermore, the relevant translation strategies and skills have also been used in translation examples, which have mainly solved difficult problems: Through initial norms in descriptive translation studies theory, the balance between source language and target language has been achieved, which means the compromise of adequacy and acceptability. It instructs the description of the environment and figures to maintaining the style of original version in source language and the common expression in target language.Preliminary norms help the translator deal with particular words with political meaning and inter-language in text. The integrity of the translation has been guaranteed by operational norms in macro and micro levels, through the translation skills like omission, addition, adjustment of sentence order and annotations to the matricial norms. It also fulfills the textual-language norms from the processing of terms and italics.Through this practice, the translator summarizes some rules: Firstly, adequacy and acceptability in initial form can handle translations in accordance with the principles of domestication and foreignization.Under certain conditions,it can be combined for a better translation.Secondly, because of the cultural specificity and exotic style in this novel,it isnecessary to prepare background information and to deal with some problems like cultural-loaded words with translation policy in preliminary norms and matricial norms in operational norms. In addition,in the process of translation, the translator should not be trapped in the original text. With the guidance of translation norms and the application of corresponding translation methods, translator should use adjustment and appropriate addition and deletion to solve the problem. Finally, during this translation practice, the translator learns about the colonial history of Australia, with deepening the knowledge of Toury's descriptive translation theory and enhancing the translation ability of literary texts.
