Audience awareness,which functions as a way of enabling a writer to assume his audience and adapt his writing to the needs of the audience,is one of the key elements influencing the quality of writing.It is crucial to determine the learner’s success in writing.However,there is skills’ training about “what to write” and “how to write” in senior high school English writing teaching in China,but the issue of “who to write” and “who to show”is not paid attention to,and the education of “audience awareness” is relatively lacking.Consequently,students write with poor discourse coherence and quality caused by the lack of audience awareness.The purpose of this study is to reveal the current situation of senior high school students’ audience awareness in English writing and find out reasons for the lack of audience awareness of senior high school students through analyzing the English writing corpus of some senior high school students and combining with questionnaire survey and interview.Additionally,this paper put forward some corresponding teaching countermeasures.It is wonderful if this study can arouse the teacher and student’s attention on audience awareness and may have a positive impact on cultivating students’ audience awareness in the process of writing,and finally,to improve students’ English writing level.The study aims to answer the following two questions:(1)What’s the current situation of senior high school students’ audience awareness in English writing?(2)What are the reasons for the lack of audience awareness of senior school students in English writing? And writing test,interview and questionnaire are used to collect data.The subjects of this study are the teachers and students of one senior high school in Ordos,there are 309 questionnaires and 153 students’ test compositions were collected,and six English teachers and six students participate the face-to-face interview in theresearch.And then,students’ test compositions are analyzed from the perspective of discourse coherence,teachers and students’ face-to-face interviews are also analyzed carefully through being written down and the author has finished the descriptive statistics and analysis of the questionnaire with the help of SPSS22.0.The major findings of this study include the following two aspects: first,most senior high school students pay less attention to the audience in the process of writing,and even lack audience awareness,which is embodied in the following four aspects: chaotic role position,“missing link” in the form of language,self-centered and inadequate theme development;second,main reasons for senior high school students lacking audience awareness are concluded as follows: the general neglect in cultivating students’ audience awareness education(the direct reason),learner’ current language competence,the narrow audience setting,teachers’ overemphasis on language and skills in teaching guidance and the required writing.Based on the results of the study,this paper also puts forward some relevant countermeasures combined with related literature: combining the theoretical explanation with students’ exemplary composition,imagining audience,audiences’ feedback,application of the process propulsion and providing sufficient training time,which may have practical significance to cultivate students’ audience awareness in English writing teaching of senior high school.
