Imagery,as an important part of ancient Chinese poetry, has always played an elementary role in poetry appreciation. This article tends to analyze the English translation of Li Shangyin's poems from the perspective of imagery characteristics. It will comparatively analyze the existing translations of Li Shangyin's poems, and try to put forward a new perspective for the translation of Li Shangyin's poems. From this perspective, translator should try to re-embody Li Shangyin's different worlds through re-embodying the imagery characteristics. This article mainly takes the translations of two translators as examples,Xu Yuanchong and James J.Y.Liu,supplemented by the translations of Stephen Owen,Witter Bynner and A.C.Graham.This article discusses the representation of the imagery characteristics of poetry in the English translation of Li Shangyin's poems from three perspectives: the recurrence of imagery, the concatenation of imagery, and the ontology and metaphor of imagery. The first chapter discusses the recurrence of imagery in the English translation of Li Shangyin's poems. The author concludes that the translator should respect the complete the recurrence of imagery in the original poems and try to represent the imagery by translating other components related to the imagery. The second chapter discusses the representation of the imagery concatenation in the English translation of Li Shangyin 's poems. The author believes that the translator should try to sort out the logical images through analyzing the original meaning and allusions of the images. So that they can represent the feelings of the poet.At the same time, translators are able to represent the incomprehensible style of the original poems through preserving the concatenation of illogical images.Chapter Three discusses the representation of the ontological and metaphorical phenomena of the imagery in English translation of Li Shangyin's poems. The author thinks that the translator should avoid expressing the ontology and metaphor of the imagery in the original poems directly and clarify the relationship between them.Aiming at the phenomenon of missing ontology in imagery,it is necessary to avoid clarifying the ontology, and to adopt a more subtle way to imply the "trace" of ontology in poetry.
