Wuxia fiction is a bright star in the development of Chinese literature. However, the way of translating wuxia fiction into English has been confronted with great difficulty. In February 2018,Holmwood's translation of the first volume of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan,Legends of the condor heroes 1: A Hero Born was officially published. The impressive translation provoked a stir in western world. It was so popular that it has been overprinted for seven times. It is worthwhile to explore how the translator successfully introduced wuxia fiction into western world. In The Location of Culture,Homi Bhabha introduced the concept of hybridity into cultural study and promoted it to become an important term in postcolonial criticism.Homi Bhabha believed that hybridity is a fusion between languages and cultures of the colonizers and the colonies. An ambiguous space emerges when two cultures meet which was dominated as the “the third space”.In “the third space”,the conflict between different cultures can be negotiated.Hybridity in translation study is beneficial to eliminate the binary oppositions between strong culture and weak culture, source text and target text as well as domestication and foreignization in translation studies. The object of this study is Anna Holmwood's translation of the first volume of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan,Legends of the condor heroes 1: A Hero Born.Based on the theory of hybridity, this thesis aims to explore the features of hybridity and the factors influencing the hybridity in Holmwood's translation. This thesis analyzes manifestation of hybridity in translated text from three aspects, language, culture and literary style. At linguistic level, lexically,Holmwood combined foreignization and domestication.Syntactically, the translator chose to preserve some Chinese syntactic features in translated text.At cultural level, some Chinese cultural characteristics are preserved by Holmwood in order to retain the style of source text and help translated text have particularity. In the aspect of literary style, some features of Chinese classical novel are preserved, but for catering to the reading habits of English readers, some narrative methods have been adjusted.Further, this thesis discusses main factors influencing the hybridity in Legends of the condor heroes 1: A Hero Born. The research results fall into the following aspects, the translator's translation tendency and attitude, the complicated linguistic and cultural background of the source text, the improvement of target readers' acceptance and expectation as well as the press' s open attitude towards foreign culture.
