The term hybridity first comes from modern biology, then it is used in many fields such as natural andsocial science. The unique advantage of hybridity phenomenon causes concern of many scholars. The termhybridity is also applied to postcolonial translation theory, which attracts wide study by translation scholars.Through the study of hybridity phenomenon in translation, scholars both at home and abroad commonlyagree that the hybridity text is the result of communication and blend of different languages and cultures, and almost all the translated texts are featured by hybridity. Hybridity not only provides a new perspectiveto the dispute between domesticating strategy and foreignizing strategy, but also resists the hegemony ofthe western culture and promotes equal communication between cultures. The study focuses on the analysis of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s English version of Xiang Xi SanJi and explores hybridity phenomenon in its language aspect, cultural aspect and literature aspect. As aresult, the study finds the translators employ foreignization and domestication, which makes the translatedtext bear the characteristic of foreignization-oriented hybridity. The foreignization keeps the flavor ofChinese local culture, and provides a chance for English readers to taste the exoticism. Meanwhile, thedomestication effectively guarantees the readability of the translated text. The study also discusses implications of the hybridity of the translated Xiang Xi San Ji for the study ofthe literary translation criteria. In the literary translation, the foreignization-oriented hybridity has theadvantage of reserving the source language culture and resisting cultural hegemony as well asethnocentrism, which propels the peace development and communication of different cultures. At the sametime, the probe of hybridity in Xiang Xi San Ji has extensive enlightenment for Chinese to English literarytranslation. Although hybridity has various advantages, only appropriate hybridity in translation canefficiently spread Chinese culture.
