A Study Of Anna Holmwood's Translation Of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan Based On House's Transaltion Quality Assessment Model

Jin Yong's works have enjoyed high status in China,Japan,Korea and southeast Asia.Recently,some of his works have been hugely popular with western readers.The fact that Anna Holmwood's translation of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan sold out and was reprinted seven times within a month demonstrates the great popularity of Jin Yong's work and Anna Holmwood's translation.There are several papers researching Holmwood's English translation,which focus on comparisons of text details but seldom assess the translation quality from the functional equivalence perspective.This paper assesses the translation quality of Holmwood's English translation by applying Juliane House's model.In this way,this paper explores the reasons for its popularity and reveals the translation strategies used in the translation work.House's translation quality assessment model is based on Hallidayan systemic functional grammar,and the main operation of the model is detailed comparison and analysis of source text and target text.To begin with,both source text and target text are analyzed according to Field,Tenor,Mode and Genre.Then,by comparing the analyzed results of both texts,mismatches in Field,Tenor,Mode and Genre are picked out.Finally,the translation quality is evaluated according to the quantity of mismatches and the achievement in terms of the realization of the function of the original text.House's TQA(translation quality assessment)model can be widely used in some genres: for example,novels,prose,poetry and so on,as verified by House and other researchers.In its evaluation of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan's English translation,Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born,this paper finds that House's TQA model is applicable to the Chinese martial arts novel,and Anna Holmwood's is of a high translation quality largely because of the combination of the overt translation and covert translation she used in the text.It is argued that more attention should be paid to the readability than to the translation of text details in further English translations of martial arts novels.
